Should You Clean Your Air Ducts
Air duct cleaning has not been
definitively shown to
prevent occurrence of health problems. Some studies
have
been done, but none have conclusively proven that dust levels in homes
are increased due to dirty air ducts. The reason for this is simply
that most of the dirt which has gotten into air ducts adheres
to
the duct inner surfaces, and does not usually become blown into the
living space.
Keep in mind that dirt in air ducts is only one of the many possible
causes of dust which is found in homes. Polluting materials can enter
the home as a result of either indoor or outdoor sources such
as
smoking, cooking, cleaning, or just from occupants moving about. Most
of these things bring about more exposure to dust and other
contaminants than dirty air ducts will. No evidence has been found that
small amounts of dust or other particles in air ducts constitute any
real risk to human health.
Air ducts in your
home should be cleaned if:
You can see visible mold growth inside ducts, or associated with any
components of your heating and air conditioning system. A number of
important points to should be considered about mold detection in
heating and air conditioning systems:
Much of the heating and cooling system may be impossible to inspect
visually, so you should ask the service man to point out to
you
the mold he says exists. Also realise that a substance may resemble
mold, but this can only be determined for sure by an expert, and
could quite possibly require laboratory analysis to
definitely
confirm this. For a fee of about $50, certain microbiology labs will
tell you if a sample you send to them, on a piece of clear
sticky
Scotch tape, really is mold or only something that looks like mold.
If your air ducts are insulated and the insulation has become wet or
moldy looking it cannot be cleaned and must be replaced with new
insulation. If the mold growth is the result of damp conditions this
needs to be corrected to prevent further mold growth from taking place.
