When Should I Replace My Furnace
Many consumers have difficulty in deciding when the time has come to
replace their old furnace. This is a decision which involves a
considerable expenditure,so it should not be taken lightly.
The most pertinent factor in deciding when to replace a furnace, is the
working condition and age of the present unit. Oil and gas fuelled
furnaces usually last for about 15 to 20 years when properly maintained.
The heat exchangers in old furnaces are of lower efficiency than new
model,s and remove less heat from the burnt fuel. The fan motor is single
speed, and much less efficient then the motors in new furnaces.
If the furnace has not been kept well maintained, and air filters
regularly serviced, it may last for less time than expected thus
necessitiating earlier replacement. It is imperative to have a furnace
serviced annually, and to inspect and replace air filters as needed.
Many older furnaces were oversize when installed. Oil was cheap years
ago and nobody was too concerned about efficiency, and using less fuel.
The correct size of furnace should be established by an experienced
contractor, and will likely be smaller than the old one. It will use
less fuel because of its smaller size, and also because it has a much
higher effciency rating. A furnace whuich was manufactured 20 years or
more ago is likely to be about 60% efficient or sometimes even less.
New high efficiency furnaces are 90% to 97% efficient, and use much less
fuel to heat the home. High efficiency furnaces can usually be installed
using the same ductwork that is presently in the home.Venting of
exhaust gases is normall through a side wall so that the chimney is no
longer used. the temperature of the exhaust gases is low enough that it
can be vented through a side wall using plastic piping. Fresh air for
the furnace is drawn in through a plastic pipe from outside also.
THe high efficiency furnace will cut fuel bills considerably,
and the saving in costs will pay for the furnace in time. The length of
time till payout occurs depends on fuel consumption. In colder climates
where more fuel is used the saving will be greater than in more
moderate climates.
